The Cowhide Cave
By Thomas Graf
Academy Homework - June 2005
The beginning of Earth
When the first objects appeared on Earth, one of them was a cave made of cowhide (the stuff that covers baseballs). It appeared on the land that would later be known to be North America.
1845
Centuries later, when the game baseball was invented, the cave began to grow larger day by day. Every day it would widen by an inch, and the extra places where the cave had grown would also be cowhide. One day, when the cave was about 6 times larger than it was when it appeared on earth, it stopped growing. It was big enough for what it had in mind to do one day.
1999
The game of baseball had become so popular now it got the name “The national pastime”. The year was 1999 right now, and some really awesome baseball stars had come out to play the popular game. The cave that was made out of cowhide still hadn’t been visited yet. But one person knew about it, and he was driving constantly around North America in his off-road Jeep, determined to find it. What he did know was that if he found this cave, he would be rich and famous. What he didn’t know was that this would happen.

“Oof!” said a man named Jerry Hentingson as his off-road Jeep hit a rock and he got tossed to his side. This man was searching for a cave that had an inside made of cowhide. He gained control of his Jeep and kept on driving, careful not to bump into rocks. When he saw a cave up ahead, he got closer. As he did, he noticed some words carved into the rocky outside. When Jerry got close enough, he hit the brakes and turned off the engine. He got out of his Jeep and walked up to the side of the cave that had the words carved into the side. He read out loud, “The person that finds this cave first will gain fame and riches. This cave is covered with cowhide on the inside, and a very surprising adventure is inside this cave.” Jerry read this once and said “Nah, I don’t need this cave.” Suddenly he exclaimed, “Hey, wait a minute here! What are you talking about?? This is the cave I need! He rounded the corner of the cave and went inside. When he saw the walls of the cave he almost fainted. He pounded himself on the head twenty times. Then he looked up. The names of some of the awesome baseball stars covered the walls of the cave, from Albert Pujols to Torii hunter, from Barry Zito to Derek Jeter. Jerry was stunned. As soon as he finished reading all of these names that covered the cowhide, he raced outside, jumped into his Jeep, and hit the gas, the speedometer turning up to 150 mph! Jerry didn’t even mind about hitting rocks. As soon as he reached town, he hit the brakes, drove straight home, and dialed the number to the news company. He told them about everything he had seen. Then he ran outside his house, ran straight into the center of town, and yelled “THE CAVE WITH THE INSIDE OF COWHIDE HAS BEEN DISCOVERED!!!!!!!!!” The whole town square went quiet. Then everybody cheered for Jerry, hoisted him up on their shoulders, and marched through town with Jerry Hentingson on their shoulders with pride.

From then until now, the cave with the inside of cowhide has been named, “The Cowhide Cave”. Its name will be remembered throughout the history of Earth. And the man Jerry Hentingson has gotten rich and famous, and today there is a road that leads directly to the Cowhide Cave, and even today it stands with pride in the place that it was first discovered.
